Reality is the state of things as they actually exist, rather than as they may appear or may be thought to be. In its widest definition, reality includes everything that is and has being, whether or not it is observable or comprehensible.

Historically philosophers have sometimes considered reality to include nonexistent things such as 'gold mountains' in a sense referred to as a subsistence, as well. By contrast existence is often restricted solely to being (compare with nature).

Hand-coloured version of the anonymous wood engraving known as the Flammarion woodcut (1888).

The term reality first appeared in the English language in 1550, originally a legal term in the sense of "fixed property." It originated from the Modern Latin term realitatem, which was from Late Latin realis; the meaning of "real existence" is from 1647 onwards.

How come physist tend to forget that reality start with how our minds work?
Q. Every show and everthing I read about physics tend to put a subjective definition of reality on the the laws of physics. Dont we really nead to understand the workings of our brain and mind to understand the universe? Also, I've always been taught that science only looks for the what, where, when and how. There is no 'why' in science, but wont we come to a point when we may have to consider a 'why'. Can I get a physist or neurologist to anwer this question because people answering it dont get it?

A. OK I am a PhD physicist with 40 years in the field. Physics does address the "why" question, coming up with theories to describe what is observed, and making predictions that if verified lend some credibility to the theory. However, the first observation that violates the theory causes the theory to be thrown out or modified, changing our view of the physical world. There is a limit to how deeply physics, or any science can answer the ultimate "why" question. The closer a theory gets to fundamental understanding, the clearer it is that there is a level of understanding that probably cannot be known. There are many well known cases where it was thought that science had reached a fundamental limit of knowledge, only to be upset by a… [cont.]

Do you believe in a true reality or do you believe reality is different to each individual?
Q. I tend to believe you create your own reality. Your reality is formed by your attitude. You can put two people in the exact same circumstance and have two totally different feelings of what happened and how it felt to be there. What do you think?

A. Everyone creates there own reality. Example: A woman with poor self-esteem constantly beats herself up and hates to go in public. However, a man sees her in public and she is the most beautiful thing he has seen all day. Two different realities, the same people involved.

Q. and the children that are born are cartoon characters? What are the limits to reality? How much of it is this yahoo answers experience?

A. it's reality, right here, right now !!! its a giant womb called "Half Life". cartoon characters are born and die there. soon advances will take us to dual cameras capturing our movements (and even emotions) and projecting us into a 3D inter-active experience. there are no limits to reality, only our awareness and understanding of it. the yahoo answers experience is a tiny fraction of what is yet to come. . . as long as man becomes non-violent and we all become more tolerant, the future for mankind will be "heaven on earth". As soon as 20-25 years ! Peace and Love . .
