Critical analysis?
Q. I have to write a critical analysis on the book that I have read. Do you put actual quotes from the novel into the critical analysis? If so would I just put the page number at the end of the quote without the authors last name?
Asked by brownie12866 - Mon Nov 27 21:48:49 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Ya, you can use the quote from the book, just mentioning the page number is enough as this is the critical analysis of that particular book, name of the author need not be mentioned...

How do i provide a critical analysis?
Q. I need to write a critical analysis for my summer reading project. The book is Isaac's Storm by Erik Larson. I have no idea what a critical analysis is to start off. I also need to provide 5 upper level thinking questions, but I do not know what those are like.

A. A critical analysis is supposed to be a thoughtful, well grounded, critique of what you have read. I haven't read it but think along these lines. Is it believable? Would a normal person act or react the way one or more characters do in the book? Use an example in the book and say 'this' wouldn't happen in reality... Does it draw you into the plot or cause you to have strong emotional feelings for an incident or situation? Does the behavior of the characters fit their age? Would the story unfold in real life the way it does in the book? i.e. does something happen that in the real world would involve someone calling the police etc. Are some behaviors over the edge as "even a psychotic nut would pretend to be 'normal' in that situation to… [cont.]

A. If you want your paper to be interesting, you should pick a book that appeals to your interests. Have you read any good books lately? Perhaps you should think about the last good book you have read. If you haven't read any books lately, you may want to pick a classic. In other words, pick a book that has been written about for many years. I don't want to pull you in any particular direction but you may be interested in Ernest Hemingway or Graham Greene. Hemingway won the Nobel Prize in literature for his simplistic writing style. His books are fairly easy to read and understand. When writing a Critical Analysis, can you use multiple sources?
Q. I am writing a Critical Analysis(C.A) for an assignment in English class. Not quite sure how to write one but I believe it critiques the writer's thesis and their supporting evidence? My C.A is over the " Warren Commission report" assassination of JFK. C.A's do not have a bibliography. So when I write it I must only use cites inside the source I am writing it about?? If I don't believe this report can I somehow use other sources to prove my reasoning?? Any helpful hints would be nice.
Asked by 4U2NV - Thu Oct 16 13:32:16 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. No, you can't really cite other sources for a Critical Analysis. You're analyzing the particular report, the quality of it, and the value of the information within it...it's YOUR analysis, and meant to be drawn from your own ideas and opinions. You can mention that other sources back up your reasoning, but you don't generally cite other works in your Critical Analysis.

Can anyone help on a critical analysis presentation?
Q. I have to do a critical analysis of a newspaper story that has been in both the broadsheets and tabloids and then do a presentation on this critical analysis. I have chosen to do the Jade Goody story. I have never done a presentation before so not sure what it involves and the whole critical analysis thing, alongside it, is stopping my 'creative flow' as it were. This is due in on the 1st may and for weeks I have been trying to get going on it! Please help! thank you

A. analyse the way in which the story has been reported - the tabloids exaggerate and glamorise, the broadsheets tend to be more factually based. don't forget to work Michael Parkinson's very appropriate comments somewhere into your analysis - he basically summed it up - ignorant essex girl blown to fame on silly reality programme and then exploited by the press (and her "husband")

Why have Americans become incapable of critical thinking and analysis: whose fault is it?
Q. Why have Americans become incapable of independent thinking? It's all very black and white in America, there's no gray area: either you're conservative or you're liberal. You're vilified in both situations. The only Americans that really 'master' the art of critical thinking/analysis and independent thinking are the ones that travel to different parts of the world, and see what the world really is, and what a good job our media does in dumbing down the masses. Make no mistake, America is a very stringent 'police' state in every sense of the word.

A. Nowdays idiocy is a part of our airwaves, thanks to FOX News, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and other morons. What disturbs me is, how did these people become popular in the first place? I suspect that Americans have just never been very critical thinkers. We have not had the scorching experience of being invaded or of our land being a world war battlefield as in Europe. Our white European ancestors convinced themselves they were God's elect, and that America's "Manifest Destiny" was to rule from sea to shining sea. That's fine, but they also developed a certain uncritical attitude -- since God was on our side, we must be the best, right? American leaders all too often rush into wars and wrap themselves in patriotism and the flag. Ever… [cont.]

A. This is the technique that I have developed over many years of paper writing: I'd go over each work and identify maybe three major divisions/categories of information from each. I like to categorize information, then make an outline. I'm not terribly familiar with your topic, though I have read the books. But, let's say I'm writing about women's roles in Shakespeare--something I do know a lot about. Maybe I want to highlight three works--Macbeth, Hamlet, and Taming of the Shrew. In this example, I might focus on wives, daughters, and mothers. I would make an outline for Macbeth with the categories: wives, mothers, daughters. Then, I would go through Macbeth and find some good quotes or examples for each category and put it into… [cont.]

Where can I find a critical analysis of the education systems in France and Denmark?
Q. This is for a BA (Education) Module. I can find information about individual country's education systems but not comparative information. Any help very gratefully received.

A. A good starting place would be newspaper archive web sites, in the hope that they have done a feature on this. Try Education Guardian and The Times Higher Education. Also take a look at Le Monde - www.lemonde.fr It's in French, of course. Not unreasonable if you want information from the horse's mouth. Right now is a good time, because the new government wants to reform higher education. So Le Monde is carrying long guest columns analysing the situation.

Can anyone provide some ideas on a critical analysis Michel Foucault rejection of the repression hypothesis?
Q. I have to do a reaction paper giving a critical analysis of his rejection of the hypothesis... thanks
Asked by Chickie - Fri Oct 31 13:22:13 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. What exactly are you looking for? Simply stated the repression hypothesis is found in the introduction to sexuality vol 1. Foucault rejects this notion simply because no repressor can be found in order to have a population be repressed. Rather, Foucault argues that sexuality has been produced through different power mechanism and knowledge based disciplines; look at the "ologies" for example - psychology took sex up in the theme of Freud, biology reduced sex to mere reproductive function, medicine in terms of health/sickness.

Q. We have a homework assignment for AP english to find a "critical essay or review" about each of the plays we have to read over the summer. the three plays are: 1. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead by Tom Stoppard 2. Hamlet by William Shakespeare 3. Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett the information the teacher gives us is this: "You are to find and read ONE critical essay or review for EACH work. Does anyone know where I can find only critical analysis sites on George Orwell's Animal Farm?
Q. I'm working on an AP English term paper about George Orwell's Animal Farm...the only problem is that I'm supposed to use things critiques have said. So does anyone know any good critical analysis sites? I've used all the books that I have available but I still need more information... If anyone could give me some sites that would be totally awesome. Thanks a lot!

A. Go to the library and use a set of books called Contemporary Literary Criticism. There might be an electronic version as well. The Internet is a mile wide and an inch deep. I wouldn't trust it for academic research unless you are sure the information you are getting is trustworthy.
