Truth can have a variety of meanings, from the state of being the case, being in accord with a particular fact or reality, being in accord with the body of real things, events, actuality, or fidelity to an original or to a standard. In archaic usage it could be fidelity, constancy or sincerity in action, character, and utterance. The term has no single definition yet about which over fifty percent of professional philosophers and scholars agree, and various theories and views of truth continue to be debated. There are differing claims on such questions as what constitutes truth; what things are truthbearers capable of being true or false; how to define and identify truth; the roles that revealed and acquired knowledge play; and whether truth is subjective, relative, objective, or absolute. This article introduces the various perspectives and claims, both today and throughout history.

The major theories of truth

The question of what is a proper basis for deciding how words, symbols, ideas and beliefs may properly be considered true, whether by a single person or an entire society, is dealt with by the five major substantive theories introduced below. Each theory presents perspectives that are widely shared by published scholars. There also have more recently arisen "deflationary" or "minimalist" theories of truth based on the idea that the application of a term like true to a statement does not assert anything significant about it, for instance, anything about its nature, but that the label truth is a tool of discourse used to express agreement, to emphasize claims, or to form certain types of generalizations.

Is abandoning the belief in Truth a form of intellectual suicide?
Q. If there is no Truth, how can there be real knowledge? Doesn't everything devolve into opinion without belief in absolute truth? And for Christians: isn't your radical separation of faith and knowledge a tacit admission that there is no objective truth? As always, thanks in advance for your thoughtful answers.

A. There is real truth, but our comprehension of it is skewed by our perception, so there can be no real knowledge.

Do religious people understand the difference between absolute truth and that which evidence supports?
Q. Someone was asking yesterday about accepting historical facts as truth when the evidence is not entirely accurate. It seemed to me that this person didn t understand that rational people don t perceive this type of information in terms of absolute truth or outright falsehood which is how religious people seem to perceive this information. Rational people look at information like currently accepted historical facts as just that, currently accepted facts; nothing more, nothing less. Rational people say, The evidence we have at present supports this understanding of historical events. We may discover evidence in the future that suggests something different, but for now, all the evidence we have supports this understanding. See, rational… [cont.]

A. I have a "higher" IQ - I consider myself strong in my faith! If you wish to carry this debate, they are no absolute truths. There is always room for interpretation and correction. Religion is not about just a written word but about an inner search for meaning and peace. I happen to be Christian and within my "family" we have Dr's, RN's, PHD's and more. I don't think we have a "problem" with understanding intellectual pursuits. I think the pure intellectual has a problem with understanding faith! It takes a greater mind to acknowledge that which can not be tabulated or recreated.

How do you tell your child the truth about Santa?
Q. Before a child says that someone at school said this awful lie about Santa not being real, is there a way that we as parents can somehow explain the truth w/o our children feeling as though they have been lied to? Do we make up another story to soften the blow of the truth? When I was 5 yrs old, my brother told me the ugly truth, & that memory is engraved in my mind with the details of where we were & what was said. But, I am not ruined as an adult because of it. I still love Christmas and everything that comes w/ it. My daughter is now 5 yrs old and knows the reason for Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, but she, like every other kid, loves Santa. Each year we write our letter, take Santa pics & set out milk & cookies.… [cont.]

A. Start telling her the true story of St. Nicholas... I always knew the true story and still believed... St Nicholas was born in 280 AD, in Patara, a city of Lycia, A famous story about St Nicholas, is about a poor man who had no money to give to his three daughters on their wedding day. St Nick dropped bags of gold into the stockings which the girls had left to dry by the fire. The sisters found the gold and ever since, children have hung up stockings on Christmas Eve hoping that they will be filled with presents by Christmas morning. You can search the web for St. Nicholas the true story of santa clause. The story is very long but you can make it shorter. I was told that no one knows who the true Santa is today, because so many… [cont.]
